FAQs

Veterinarians FAQs

  • We don’t charge the vets anything for our services. It’s totally free for the vets.

  • Normally the clinics like vets to commit to a minimum 3 months, and often they like them to stay for 6 months. It is possible to break a 3 month stay into smaller parts, but what the clinics like is knowing that you’re able to commit to a minimum period of 3 months in total.

  • We require a minimum of 3 years clinical experience, happy working sole-charge and able to operate surgically on your own (with nurse support), ideally you would also have some Out of hours experience.

  • No! Most of the clients and all of the staff speak excellent English. So as long as you have great written and spoken English, you will be absolutely fine.

  • The clinics will help to find great accommodation that is close to the clinic. Usually, the clinic rents the accommodation for the vets and asks them to contribute towards the cost (but this is not expensive). Some clinics have their own accommodation which they cover the cost of.

  • Unfortunately, not. The clinics really like consistency, and it takes a while to get the vets used to how the clinics work so the clinics are looking for vets to stay for an initial period of 3-6 months. After this it is possible to return for a few weeks at a time once the vet knows how the clinic works.

  • Yes. If you do not have an EU or UK passport, then you can only apply for permanent vet positions and you will need a work visa (some of our clinics are willing to help with this). It is not possible to work as a self-employed professional (Locum/temporary vet) in Scandinavia if you do not hold a EU or UK passport.

As an EU national working in the European Union, you enjoy certain rights under EU law. For example: you don't need a permit to work in any EU country, either for an employer or as a self-employed person. if you meet certain conditions, you can live in the country where you work.

UK vets can work in Scandinavia without a work visa (subject to certain conditions).

  • Yes. As long as you give the clinic plenty of notice (3-4 weeks) then they can manage their rota accordingly. We encourage vets to take breaks and to explore the country they are in.

  • No! The clinics like to know that you are available to work for 3 - 6 months, but this does not mean that you have to work every day! Normally the clinics want the vets to work a 40hour week = 5 x 8 hour days. But we encourage vets to take long weekends or holidays to explore the country they are in.

  • We require our vets to complete a timesheet for each week worked at the clinic. We then will assist you creating an invoice for the clinic to pay for your services. The payments terms are usually 30 days from when the clinic received the invoice.

Clinics FAQs

  • We charge a set commission based on the vets monthly earnings (contact us directly for more information).

  • Our vets stay on average between 3-6 months in the Nordics each year. They are limited to a maximum of 6 months due to the tax rules. Shorter periods are possible too, it really depends on your needs.

  • We suggest a period of 3 months from first contact to having the vet start work at the clinic, as its takes time to get all the required paperwork issued for a vet to work in Scandinavia.

  • All our vets will have great written and spoken English. Its not a requirement for our vets to speak the local language.

  • After signing up to our terms and conditions document we will then share a selection of vets that fit your requirements. You will review the information that we have sent you on each vet (CV and Clinical skills sheet) and you then contact the candidates that you like the most via email or telephone to set up a video interview with them.

  • The vets will need a few different documents to legally work in the country. Nordic Locums helps the vets apply for and manage all the required paperwork, so the clinic does not have to.

  • The clinic will need to help the temporary vets with accommodation that is ideally close to the clinic or easily accessible by public transport. Usually, the vets are happy to contribute towards the cost of the accommodation.

  • For transportation, many of the vets will bring their own cars, but if not it is necessary to make sure they can get safely to and from their accommodation to the clinic either with a hire car, or bicycle (if the accommodation is close by) or by public transport as required.

  • Nordic Locums provides a template timesheet for the vet to complete each week they are working, this is then signed off by the clinic manager and the timesheets returned to Nordic locums at the end of each month for us to calculate and help the vets issue invoices to the clinics.

  • This rarely happens due to the process involved prior to the vet starting, but if there is a problem, we will assist you to resolve the situation and if not possible to make it work with that vet, we will do everything we can to find a suitable alternative.
